Longhua Archives is located in the north of Shenzhen Longhua Guanlan Cultural and Art Center. It bridges over two narrow sites with a public road running in the middle. Our greatest challenge is to find a balance between the security and publicness of the building, yet to form a synergy with urban context to provide flexible spaces for diverse cultural possibilities in the future.
Longhua Archives is designed for the future and the public citizens. It combines education, cultural exhibition and urban archive functions into a multi-purpose cluster. The design provides various flexible cultural and creative spaces for education and exhibition purposes horizontally in order to form dialogue with various urban interfaces. The archives form a cultural sharing platform for the city and will become a brand new cultural landmark for the Longhua New District.
  • Building a sharing city
We hope the archive is not a conventional and passive building, it should be opened and shared with the public. In order to create this three dimensional public network, we create a series of public spaces in the interior to form dialogues with the surrounding context.
We transform part of the exhibition area into an interconnected public promenade that distributed on various levels in different forms and sizes for flexible exhibition and future transformation.
  • View Analysis: Different heights on two parcels to avoid overlooking issue. South parcel massing are staggered to maximize view and create urban terraces on various levels.
  • Building height: The massing is stepping up from west to east for maximized views. It forms a leisure landscape terraces towards the riverside.
  • Cultural promenade: A public route is planned as cultural corridor to link up the riverside, archives and urban square. It also forms a sharing platform for diverse cultural events.
  • Cultural Terraces, entering from the east is a spacious urban foyer space that stepping up to the fourth floor. The grand steps link up various terraces to become a continuous cultural platform for multimedia and creative exhibition space.
  •  Ladder of Future, enter from the riverside through the sunken plaza is an uprising foyer that links various educational programs with spiraling stairs. Through the visual corridor, people enter the event platform on second floor, overlooking the exhibition center to the north.
  • Art Platform, a visual corridor is carved out in the central axis towards the Millennium Square for better connection and interaction. Walking along the landscape promenade, people gradually may take rest or read on the platform, or experience the ever changing development of the Longhua District.
  • Cloud Cascade, people walk across the bridge over the riverbank may enter the exhibition center foyer that links to the cascading atrium. Visitors may access various exhibition spaces by ascending or descending the cascade, meanwhile overlooking the Millennium Square landscape towards the south.
  • Urban Salon, people from the east side may access this atrium space with multi -functional steps and platform for resting and reading. It is also designed to cater for various forms of public forums and exhibition.
  • Exchange Square, a sunken plaza provides a buffer from the busy traffic and entrance to the building. Here people can enjoy the river park view in the alfresco cafe or participate in any outdoor cultural events taken place in the future.
